Dumpster Diving 101
Q: How do you know if you're white trash?
A: Your kids favorite pass times are playing in the gutter, and dumpster diving.
I pride myself on my great 'finds' at the local thrift store, but this is well, uncomfortable. We try to teach our children the value of a good deal, the value of recycling, the value of saving your pennies, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at Luke's new 'hobby'.
He's taken to dumpster diving. Our church is just 5 houses down the street, and since SUU just got out, a lot of students availed themselves of the church's dumpster. Luke checks this particular dumpster every time he walks past it, and in the
past has found, well, garbage. Not today. He came home so excited to show me what he 'got' his sister for her birthday. A brand new scrapbook, 2 notebooks, a dry erase board, a candle, and a set of poetry magnets. "Where on earth Luke?" "Mom! Can you believe someone just threw this stuff away! It's practically brand new!" He promptly wrapped it up in baby wrapping paper, with plenty of duct tape.
A few hours later, he went back to said dumpster, and brought home a plethora of books and other odds and ends. I guess these students would rather dump it than pack it. He says he only brought the clean ones home, apparently, there
were plenty more books, but they had fruit salad all over them. Gee, thanks bud. Anyway, he was so excited, he insisted I blog about it. Even offered to pay me to do it. That's my little attention seeker.
So, since the water is flowing in the gutter, we have entertainment just feet from the front door, and if that fails to amuse, the dumpster treasures await just down the block. Sniff** I'm so proud to be a white trash mom.! Sniff**
